Historical collaborative geocoding

چکیده
Figure 1. Graphical abstract: Gazetteers of geohistorical objects are created based on information extracted from georeferenced historical maps. Geocoding an historical address is then finding the best matching object based on customised function (semantic, temporal aspect, spatial precision, etc.). Results can be displayed in a dedicated web interface for collaborative editing. Abstract: The latest developments in digital have provided large data sets that can increasingly easily be accessed and used. These data sets often contain indirect localisation information, such as historical addresses. Historical geocoding is the process of transforming the indirect localisation information to direct localisation that can be placed on a map, which enables spatial analysis and cross-referencing. Many efficient geocoders exist for current addresses, but they do not deal with the temporal aspect and are based on a strict hierarchy (..., city, street, house number) that is hard or impossible to use with historical data. Indeed historical data are full of uncertainties (temporal aspect, semantic aspect, spatial precision, confidence in historical source, ...) that can not be resolved, as there is no way to go back in time to check. We propose an open source, open data, extensible solution for geocoding that is based on the building of gazetteers composed of geohistorical objects extracted from historical topographical maps. Once the gazetteers are available, geocoding an historical address is a matter of finding the geohistorical object in the gazetteers that is the best match to the historical address. The matching criteriae are customisable and include several dimensions (fuzzy semantic, fuzzy temporal, scale, spatial precision ...). AS the goal is to facilitate historical work, we also propose web-based user interfaces that help geocode (one address or batch mode) and display over current or historical topographical maps, so that they can be checked and collaboratively edited. The system is tested on Paris city for the 19-20th centuries, shows high returns rate and is fast enough to be used interactively.

Assessing bias associated with geocoding of historical residence in epidemiology research.
The use of geocoded historical residence as proxy for retrospective assessment of exposure in early life is increasing in epidemiological studies of chronic health outcomes. Dealing with historical residence poses challenges, primarily due to higher uncertainties associated with data collection and processing. A possible source of bias is connected with the exclusion of subjects, who cannot, fo...
متن کاملHistorical Gazetteer System Integration: CHGIS, Regnum Francorum, and GeoNames
Integration of digital gazetteers, involving the disambiguation of unique places and conflation of duplicates or variant placeneames, has been the focus of many theoretical papers in recent years. The challenge of mapping between historical instances of placenames is also an ongoing concern for several important projects dealing with ancient placenames. Here the matching of historical placename...
متن کاملSpatializing 6,000 years of global urbanization from 3700 BC to AD 2000
How were cities distributed globally in the past? How many people lived in these cities? How did cities influence their local and regional environments? In order to understand the current era of urbanization, we must understand long-term historical urbanization trends and patterns. However, to date there is no comprehensive record of spatially explicit, historic, city-level population data at t...
متن کاملSar Image Simulation Strategies for Mapping
SAR (synthetic aperture radar) images can be synthesized in a realistic way by means of an image simulator. This may be useful for several purposes, such as user training or future SAR system design. A simulation strategy depends on modelling constraints and on the purpose for which the simulation is required. After a brief historical overview and an attempt to classify the main SAR image simul...
متن کاملLong-Term Effects of Access to Health Care: Medical Missions in Colonial India
We study the long-term effect of access to health care on individuals’ health status by investigating the relationship between the proximity to a Protestant medical mission in colonial India and current health outcomes. We use individuals’ anthropometric indicators to measure health status and geocoding tools to calculate the distance between the location of individuals today and Protestant hea...
